CASE NOTE 007 — The Matter of Cease and Desist to You. See-It-Deh! to Me.

Ideas have always travelled.

Long before social media.

Long before search engines.

Long before someone discovered that changing three words somehow qualified as originality.

Good ideas have a habit of escaping.

Perhaps that's because they're useful.

Perhaps they're memorable.

Or perhaps they're simply too good to stay where they first appeared.

Professional life has always borrowed.

One colleague finds a better way to structure a report.

Another improves a process.

Someone else introduces a smarter way of running a meeting.

Progress has never been built entirely from invention.

Quite often, it's refinement.

There is, however, a quiet difference between being inspired...

...and arriving suspiciously well informed.

Most people recognise the distinction without needing it explained.

The truth is rather reassuring.

If someone is busy recreating yesterday's work...

They're already behind today's.

Originality isn't a single moment.

It's a habit.

It shows up again tomorrow.

And the day after that.

The people worth paying attention to rarely spend much time looking over their shoulder.

They're usually too occupied looking ahead.

Ideas, much like reputations, have a curious way of finding their rightful owner over time.

People remember who consistently creates.

They also remember who consistently follows.

That isn't bitterness.

It's simply how trust works.

Oddly enough, the more generous genuinely creative people become, the less anxious they seem about someone borrowing an idea.

They know another one is already forming.

Experience has taught them something rather useful.

The well doesn't run dry.

It simply needs returning to.

Perhaps that's why the most confident creators don't begin conversations with legal letters.

They begin the next project.

They write the next observation.

They sketch the next design.

They publish the next Case Note.

Because momentum is remarkably difficult to imitate.

If your best work is always still ahead of you...

Yesterday becomes surprisingly easy to let go.

After all...

The greatest inconvenience for anyone attempting to keep up...

...is discovering you've already moved on.

So, whilst others prepare the paperwork...

I'll prepare the next idea.

Cease and desist to you.

It's See-It-Deh! to me. 😊
